Colonial Middle School's Student Council spreads kindness

Colonial Middle School students recently decorated the sidewalks outside their building with colorful and kind messages as a way of creating a welcoming environment for their peers.

Using sidewalk chalk and some creativity, the students wrote encouraging notes onto various squares of cement leading into the building. Phrases such as “Be Kind,” “Everything will be OK,” “You are amazing,” and “Stay positive” could be seen along with colorful drawings of suns, hearts, clouds, and other images.

Eighth-graders Maya Brant, Callie Krauss, and Lilia Venarchik said they hoped students felt “happy and excited” to see the sidewalk messages.

Maya said it’s important to spread kindness “to keep people motivated and wanting to come to school.”

Colonial School District strives each year to create a culture of belonging in its schools in a variety of ways. To learn more about equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts, please click here to visit the EIB webpage.
